This Mass setting for double choir was published in Lobo’s first book of Masses in 1621 (a collection which also included his famous Requiem setting for 8 voices). Whilst the Requiem displays consciously archaic writing, this Mass setting uses the more contemporary scoring of two equal choirs often working in antiphony. The approach to harmony is much more functional and “modern” and lively Baroque-style rhythms and figuration are also present. It is also very concise with the shortest movement (Agnus Dei) being only 15 bars long.
