This Magnificat on the 1st tone is taken from Lobo’s 1605 cycle of 16 Magnificats (two on each of the eight tones) which was published in Antwerp. In common with the vast majority of the other settings in this publication, this is a short and largely functional piece with little polyphonic elaboration when compared to Magnificat settings by other contemporary Iberian composers – here we have very few repetitions of the text and no expansion of voices in the final verse. However, it retains a beauty in simplicity and is well-suited to simple liturgical occasions.
