In 1610 Monteverdi published his famous Vespro della Beata Vergine, showcasing his skills as one of the finest composers of his day within the new and emerging Baroque style. Also included in that publication was this Mass, a parody of Gombert’s motet In illo tempore. Gombert’s dense polyphonic writing is maintained but Monteverdi’s own musical language is evident, even within this old-fashioned polyphonic style, through his use of sequence and bold harmonic gestures for Jesu Christe, Et incarnatus est and the opening of the Benedictus. Editorial figuring has been added to Monteverdi’s Basso Continuo but the Mass may also be performed unaccompanied.
