The three “Western Wind” Masses by Sheppard, Taverner and Tye are the only English Masses of the Renaissance era that are based on a secular model – the popular monophonic song “Western wind, when wilt thou blow”. In Tye’s setting, the Western Wind melody is presented exclusively in the Alto, contrasting with Taverner’s setting where the melody moves between the Treble, Tenor and Bass. As a result, it is thought that Tye’s setting was written in response to Taverner. Although the Mass must have been written early in Tye’s career, it nonetheless displays the typical hallmarks of his music, particularly in the use of interrupted cadences.
