Tye’s magnum opus uses high and low voice trios in alternation with tutti sections featuring plenty of unexpected and exciting harmonic turns. It has been suggested that this Mass was Tye’s doctoral submission at Cambridge in 1545, though it has also been shown to be based on Tye’s paraliturgical motet Quaesumus omnipotens et misericors Deus (written during the reign of Edward VI) so a later composition date seems likely. Either way, the 6-part scoring epitomises English music of the first half of the 16th century with its prominent use of the high treble.
