This intense setting of Jesus’s words spoken in the Garden of Gethsemane according to St Matthew’s Gospel survives only in Portuguese manuscripts and was used as an Offertory motet on Palm Sunday at Chapel of the Dukes of Braganza, Vila Viçosa. The sound world is typical of late Iberian Renaissance music, but Lobo also punctuates the dense polyphony with a moving homophonic statement of Jesus’s plea “Father, if it is possible, may this cup pass from me” to great effect.
