John Sheppard (c.1515-1558)

John Sheppard was Informator Choristorum at Magdalen College, Oxford and later a Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal during the reign of Mary I. Owing to the changing religious and political climate, he wrote sacred music in a wide range of styles – from lavishly scored festal Masses and Responds to austere compositions in English for the new Anglican Church – but is most celebrated for his elaborate Latin-texted ritual music.
