Tallis’s two settings of Lamentations are some of the finest examples of English polyphony from the 16th century. Each verse opens with a statement of a Hebrew letter followed by anguished and expressive settings of the verse text. Both settings end with a heart-wrenching plea – Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord your God.
