Three books of Vivanco’s music were published in his lifetime. His first publication was a Book of Magnificats from 1607 containing a complete cycle of 16 Magnificats. As was customary, there are two settings of the eight tones, setting odd and even verses respectively. However, book-ending the cycle are two more ambitious settings of which this is the last (the other being his Primi Toni setting for 6 voices). Only in the Et misericordia verse does he reduce the richly scored 8-part texture to 4 voices and the resulting sound world is incredibly opulent – a fine example of the Spanish Siglo de Oro.
