Alongside the seven Mass settings in his 1625 publication, Cardoso also included two antiphons, a Responsory for the Office of the Dead and two motets – Non mortui qui sunt in inferno and Sitivit anima mea. Both may have been intended as funeral motets, appearing after the Requiem Mass and before the Libera me Responsory. There is an ethereal quality to the opening of this motet with prominent chromaticism and a spacious polyphonic texture.
