An opulent setting of part of St Thomas Aquinas’s Corpus Christi hymn Sacris solmeniis. O res mirabilis is stated 3 times, each time with a bold harmonic gesture to depict the words “O wondrous thing!”. The final statement alone features double suspensions, augmented harmonies and a false relation, and it perfectly encapsulates the synthesis of Renaissance polyphonic composition and Baroque expression inherent in Portuguese sacred music of the early 17th century.
