This highly expressive motet employs a canon between the top two voices in a manner similar to Guerrero’s famous Ave virgo sanctissima (here, the canon is at the third rather than the unison). The simple imitation between the highest voices contrasts with the bold harmonic gestures in the lower voices (particularly evident on the words Quam pulchra es and carissima). The Altus may be sung by Baritones if desired.
