A concise parody of Palestrina’s Advent Motet Veni Domine. Lobo’s choice of model for this Mass may be significant: The original text of the motet is Come, Lord, and do not delay. Come and free thy people from their misdeeds, and bring back the dispersed to your land. At the time of publication (1621) Portugal was under Spanish rule and contemporary Portuguese audiences may have drawn parallels between this text (anticipating the arrival of Christ) and the hope for the restoration of Portugal’s monarchy and independence.
