Iberian composers of the late 16th and early 17th centuries showed an extraordinary interest in enigmatic canonical writing and this paraphrase Mass contains a good example. In the final movement Cantus II is unnotated in the source and has to derive its part from the Latin instructions Quinta vox per tempora sequitur meQuatuor tacendo initio finem reperies. It is realised by singing only the breves of Cantus I, which forms the opening phrase of the paraphased chant, and then repeating in retrograde.
